The theme for the 2017 American Society of Civil Engineers Southeast Student Conference is Civil Goes Green in 2017. Typically, the visual display design conveys the conference theme through a creative artistic display. This year, the scope of the competition is expanded by adding a functional aspect to the display. We challenge students to combine creativity, sustainability, and constructability knowledge to build a trash receptacle out of sustainable and durable materials that represents the theme of the conference as well as artistically showcasing your school’s geographical location.


Students will build a creative and functional 40 gallon trash receptacle while applying innovation and sustainability principles. Each team will decorate their trash receptacle with a nod to the school’s geographical location. The displays will remain at FAU to commemorate the competition. All trash receptacle displays will incorporate the theme of the 2017 ASCE Southeast Student Conference, Civil Goes Green in 2017.


Each team may have up to five (5) members, one (1) of which may be a graduate student.

General Rules

  • The display created by each school is to be constructed prior to the 2017 Southeast Student Conference.
  • Each entry will be placed on display the day of the competition, where judges will score each one based on originality, functionality, and creativity and artistic quality relating to the conference theme and each school’s respective geographic location, cost of materials, and sustainability.
  • All scoring will be at the discretion of the judges.


  • The receptacle should be created for a 40 gallon trash can liner, equipped with a cover to keep raccoons out.
  • The receptacle must fit within a four (4) foot by four (4) foot area and should not exceed five (5) feet in height.
  • The display should not exceed 30 pounds. Entries that exceed this maximum weight will be deducted 20 points off the final score.
  • The display must have the school name clearly identifiable as part of the receptacle or attached, not separate.
  • No entry will require power connections in keeping with the sustainability theme.
  • Each team will be limited to a budget of $150.
  • A technical report submitted to the judges during the competition will be required consisting of: 1) Cost sheet: a list of materials and costs in table form and brief narrative explaining any sustainable or originality concepts that went into the design (this must fit on one 8.5” x 11” sheet of paper), and 2) Scoring summary sheet: a copy of the scoring summary sheet for this competition must be attached to the cost sheet with one staple. Note: the school’s name shall be listed at the top on the cost sheet.
  • Creative use of recycled and/or free materials is encouraged. Note: the total cost of up to $150 should include the estimated price of all donated/upcycled materials.

Sustainable Design

Sustainable designs may include (but are not limited to):

  • Materials and resources
  • Repurposed/recycled materials
  • Material tracking (quantity source end use, estimated cost savings)
  • Durability (regional materials)


Each team will present its trash receptacle to a panel of judges. The entries will be ranked based on the following criteria:

  1. Originality/functionality (20%)
  2. Creative display of the University name (20%)
  3. Artistic quality of conference theme (20%)
  4. Low cost (20%)
  5. Implementation of sustainable design (20%)


  • If the university name is not legible or is missing, the entry will be disqualified.
  • Failure to drop off the entry and technical paper at the appropriate time and location will result in disqualification.
  • Entries that do not fit within specified dimensions will be disqualified.
