FAU Researcher of the Years Awards
College of Engineering Recipients
Dr. Edgar
An is an associate professor of Ocean Engineering at FAU, whose
research activities have been primarily in the areas of underwater
navigation, modeling and stimulation. He has developed systems for
underwater vehicle navigation used for clandestine military search
and survey operations, such as minefield reconnaissance. He has generated
more than $3.6 million dollars of external sponsored research from
the Office of Naval Research, the National Science Foundation and
the state of Florida. In fall of 2001, Dr. An became the director
of the Advanced Marine Systems lab and, as director, is continuing
to explore other research opportunities, such as NOAA Ocean Exploration
office and the Department of Homeland Security. He has authored 23
refereed journal publications, 54 conference papers and a book chapter,
and has participated in international conferences and workshops. Edgar
was named FAU Researcher of the Year at the ranks of assistant professor
five years ago and since then has continued to excel in his contributions
to oceanographic research and exploration as an expert in vehicle
navigation.
Dr. Frederick Driscoll
has been at FAU for four years where he has been actively involved
in research and publication at the leading edge of technology. He
has written eight successful proposals and has secured nearly 1.5
million in research funding from government and industry sources.
Although a junior faculty member, Rick has also developed several
novel research disciplines at FAU including finite-element modeling
of underwater cables, ocean current energy, and ocean mooring technology.
Other areas of active research include data fusion and processing
techniques for ocean sensors, physical oceanography, and control
of ocean systems. As a result, he has published eight journals and
11 conference papers. In addition, Rick has supervised 11 graduate
students, three of whom have won international awards for their
research. |
