Ten lucky students from Stranahan and Blanche Ely H.S. will work with Edgar An, Ph.D., professor in the department of ocean and mechanical engineering at FAU. An received a grant from the National Science Foundation to work with ten students, five from Blanche Ely High School and five from Stranahan High School, along with a teacher from each school. The workshop will begin fall 2010 and continue into the spring 2011 term.
The grant is a culmination of the School Board-approved partnership between the FAU College of Engineering and Computer Science and Broward County Public Schools Science/Pre-Engineering Magnet Programs. Benjamin J. Williams, Vice Chair of the School Board, initiated the innovative partnership, which will give students the opportunity to work with some of the most innovative underwater technology available.
Students will learn how to use a $500,000 remote-operated submarine with guidance from nine FAU ocean engineering graduate students and An. FAU recently purchased two of the submarines. Students will go to the FAU Dania Beach SeaTech campus location four times each semester with the following objectives:
