Shihong Huang, Ph.D., an associate professor in the department of computer and electrical engineering and computer science, within the College of Engineering and Computer Science at Florida Atlantic University, was recently awarded a $65,000 research grant to work on a series of projects with two undergraduate students for research and development of web-based applications that can be accessed without the restriction of geographical location.
The students will work with Huang in her lab at FAU's Boca campus to complete projects for ProntoProgress, a software company based in Fort Lauderdale. ProntoProgress will provide funding for one year, which includes a $35,000 membership in the NSF-sponsored Industry/University Cooperative Research Center for Advanced Knowledge Enablement.
"The goal of the projects is to focus on both research and education while also bridging the gap with industry relations," said Huang. "Not only will the research provide helpful tools, but it also will afford these students real-world software development experience to complement their coursework within the College of Engineering and Computer Science. The projects also provide mentoring and training to help students gain various skills necessary to be successful in the workplace."
One such project is the Bluewater Inventory Charts and Compliance System (BICCS) Project and consists of an inventory and customer management system focused on the nautical industry, more specifically for large boats and yachts. Clients of the system will use the BICCS to manage their inventory, activate/deactivate corrections for nautical charts, place new orders, and print reports for inventory to demonstrate compliance with new and changing sea laws.
