The first class of students from Florida Atlantic University's geomatics engineering program in the College of Engineering and Computer Science's department of civil, environmental and geomatics engineering will graduate on Thursday, May 5 at 5 p.m. at FAU’s Boca Raton campus, 777 Glades Road.
Robert Loane, Thomas Walker, Eric Watts and Troy Wright are the first group of students from the initial class of FAU’s geomatics engineering program, which is the first in the southeastern United States.
"This is a very exciting time for the program and for FAU," said Don Leone, Ph.D., interim director and visiting professor of geomatics engineering. "We are proud of this first graduating class."
The program offers courses for those seeking a career as a land-surveyor professional and was originally created in response to the 2005 change in Florida statutes requiring that individuals seeking state licensure as professional land surveyors be trained at the baccalaureate level. Geomatics engineers design, develop and operate systems for collecting and analyzing spatial information about the land, oceans, natural resources and manmade features.
Headquartered at FAU's Treasure Coast campus in Port St. Lucie, this 120-credit, four-year bachelor of science degree in geomatics engineering (BSGE) provides students with the professional skills required for today's geospatial specialist. The College's focus on moving toward eLearning also is reinforced through this program, with upper-division courses offered online.
