In recognition of his strong support for the FAU Southeast National Marine Renewable Energy Center (SNMREC), Susan Skemp, Executive Director of SNMREC, presented Chancellor Brogan, of the State University System, with a mock-up the Center’s turbine.
The Southeast National Marine Renewable Energy Center (SNMREC) is investigating the potential of harnessing the power of the Gulf Stream for the generation of base load electricity, thereby making a unique contribution to a broadly diversified portfolio of renewable energy for the nation’s future. As the first applicant for a lease to conduct Marine Hydrokinetic (MHK) testing and evaluation on the outer continental shelf (OCS), SNMREC has been uniquely positioned to coordinate and provide input into the developing regulatory oversight and framework across state and federal agencies. It is anticipated that the lease will be issued the first half of 2012 and the turbine will be deployed in the Gulf Stream soon thereafter.
