FAU Student Named Technology Student Leader of the Year by the Greater Miami Chamber of Commerce
Florida Atlantic University’s College of Engineering and Computer Science student Christina Zarrilli has been named the Technology Student Leader of the Year by the Greater Miami Chamber of Commerce.
The Chamber highlights individuals and organizations with extraordinary technological hands-on experience whose management of technology resources and/or technological innovations have made outstanding contributions to their organization and the community.
Zarrilli, 20, was nominated for the award by ITWomen, a volunteer-based not-for-profit organization that helps advance women in IT and technology related fields in South Florida.
“While we don’t do what we do for award recognition, it certainly is nice to be honored,” said, Zarrilli. “I want to thank the ITWomen for nominating me and for their support and encouragement. It is a privilege to be representing Florida Atlantic University.”
“We are very proud to have the opportunity to work with students like Christina Zarrilli in our College,” said Mohammad Ilyas, interim dean of the College of Engineering and Computer Science at FAU. “She has a bright future ahead of her and we look forward to hearing about her accomplishments in the field of ocean energy.”
Zarrilli is a member of the College’s Innovation Leadership Honors program and a junior majoring in ocean engineering. She is an active volunteer, logging more than 4,500 hours of service with the Civil Air Patrol, the FAU Service Learning Board, the Society of Women Engineers and at St. Jude’s Catholic Church in Boca Raton. Zarrilli said her career goals are to educate others about the importance of conservation and to bring ocean energy to fruition, making it practical, affordable and available to people worldwide. She views this career track in promoting international conservation, environmental protection and alternative energy policies as important for the nation’s and the world’s future.
The event was attended by industry executives and included seven other technology award categories.
